The Waqf Amendment Bill has been a significant topic of discussion in the Indian Parliament. After a 12-hour-long debate, the Lok Sabha passed the Waqf Amendment Bill in a late-night voting session at 2 AM on Wednesday. A total of 520 MPs participated, with 288 voting in favour and 232 opposing the bill.

Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, named the bill “Unified Waqf Management Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development” (UMEED). The Waqf Amendment Bill is now set to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha today.

Owaisi’s Protest: “This Bill Humiliates Muslims”

During the discussion, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi strongly opposed the Waqf Amendment Bill, tearing up a copy in protest. He declared,

“This bill is intended to humiliate Muslims. I tear it apart just as Gandhi tore unjust laws.”

Amit Shah Defends the Waqf Amendment Bill

Union Home Minister Amit Shah dismissed concerns over the Waqf Amendment Bill, stating:

“Non-Islamic entities will not be included in Waqf. There is no such provision. Minorities are being misled for vote-bank politics.”

After the discussion, Shah also proposed President’s Rule in Manipur, which was passed by voice vote in the Lok Sabha.

Rijiju: “Without This Bill, Even Parliament Could Have Been Claimed as Waqf Property”

Defending the Waqf Amendment Bill, Kiren Rijiju stated:

“If we had not introduced this bill, even this Parliament building could have been claimed as Waqf property.”

He further alleged that in March 2014—just before the general elections—123 prime properties were hurriedly transferred to the Delhi Waqf Board.

Amit Shah: “This Bill is for the Poor, Not for Theft”

Amit Shah clarified:

“The Waqf Amendment Bill is meant to benefit the poor, not for land-grabbing. One MP says minorities won’t accept it—what kind of threat is that? This is Parliament’s law; it must be accepted.”

He further explained that Waqf is an Arabic term referring to the donation of property for religious purposes in the name of Allah.

Opposition Accuses Government of Diverting Attention

SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the government of shifting focus from China’s encroachments:

“Railway and defence lands are being sold, but the focus is only on Waqf. What about the villages China has built in India?”

“If your speech matches the JPC report, I will resign from Parliament.”

JDU leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) rejected allegations that the Waqf Amendment Bill was anti-Muslim, stating:
